The Ice Hockey Academy is led by a team of professional and local coaches and players who are passionate about sharing their love for the game. We offer programs for both children and adults, catering to everyone from complete beginners to those aiming to play at a competitive or professional level. Our adults courses include Learn to Skate Hockey, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and a specialist class, Power & Edges. Our JR programs include 2 different skating based programs, Edge and Flow and Learn to skate hockey as well as our Jr hockey academy.

NEW TO SKATING?
To begin your ice hockey journey, you first need to skate. Ice Hockey Academy focuses on gameplay skills and tactics as well as specific skating skills for ice hockey. It is expected that you are competent with the minimum skating requirements outlined below to get the full benefit of Ice Hockey Academy classes.
COMPLETED SKATE SCHOOL LEVEL 6 OR LEARN TO SKATE HOCKEY?
For those who have completed Learn to Skate Hockey or Level 6 of Skate School , you are ready to progress into our Basic level ice hockey classes.

There are many pathways into hockey, so if you’ve never attended an Ice Hockey Academy course at The Ice ArenA, or you play ice hockey with a club, chat with our team to book in an assessment where our coaches will guide you to the appropriate course level for you.

The Ice ArenA also offers specialised ice hockey courses for those looking to take their game to the next level. We also run regular camps and clinics and we work closely with IHSA who also run various development programs.

SKATE SCHOOL
Our Skate School course will get you comfortable with the fundamentals of skating. Students wishing to join Ice Hockey Academy are recommended to achieve Level 5&6 of Skate School to be competent in these techniques.
For Adults, we offer Learn to Skate Hockey, a bridging course for skating techniques specific to ice hockey. Adults only need to complete Aussie Skate Level 2 in Skate School before moving onto Learn to Skate Hockey.

New to skating and hockey? Learn to Skate Hockey is an Adults Only bridging course. Adults learn differently, and this course develops the specific skating skills required in hockey including basic hockey stance, forward and backward stride, crossovers, starting and stopping, edge techniques and other necessary fundamentals.

Ice Hockey Academy is a course running the length of each school term helping people of all ages to learn and improve their ice hockey game skills, to provide pathways and progress through the divisions and grades of hockey.
Booking is available online and at Reception. We also offer drop-in options, these can be arranged and paid for at Reception.
When you enroll in a full term you also receive 10x FREE Skate Passes valid for Public Skate, Stick & Puck, and Shinny sessions to practice in your own time.
REQUIREMENTS
It is recommended that students have taken one of our introductory learn to skate Ice Hockey programs or completed level 5,6 of skate school.
Ice Hockey Academy is focused on teaching the game and improving the efficiency of skating techniques, it does not focus on the fundamental basics of skating as much as our dedicated Learn to Skate Ice Hockey courses do. Skaters who aren’t quite comfortable on their skates yet might not get the most out of this course — we recommend building a bit more confidence first.

LEVELS
Ice Hockey Academy offers classes from Basic to Advanced for Juniors and Adults.
Our Advanced classes are All Ages.
BASIC
In the Basic Hockey Academy, we focus on developing all the fundamental skills of ice hockey. You’ll work on skating both with and without the puck, practice passing and receiving in both stationary and moving situations, and learn proper shooting techniques. Our goal is to help every player build a solid foundation and grow their confidence on the ice.

INTERMEDIATE
The focus is on applying the skills acquired from our Basic course to more complex game play. There is more attention to developing speed in your skills including skating and split decision making, ice hockey is a fast game after all. This course is recommended to anyone currently playing summer league Div 1-2, winter league, or people that have completed the basic course and want to take their development to the next level.
Adult Intermediate Wed 6pm - 7pm
ADVANCED
Take all the skills you have acquired and apply them into advanced game play scenarios. The focus is on applying offensive and defensive tactics for individuals and for small groups in the fast-paced scenarios of an ice hockey game.

POWER & EDGES
Our Power & Edges program focuses on developing explosive skating techniques and improving overall speed and agility. Players will learn to master edge control, balance, and precision on the ice. Each session is designed to apply these skills in game-like situations, helping skaters move with confidence and power during real play.

Students attending this course are expected to be proficient skaters already. This course is recommended for those in Ice Hockey Academy Advanced and those playing in B Grade and above.

Edge and Flow is a fun, creative skating class designed to help young skaters build confidence and control on their edges. Using a mix of playful drills and innovative movement patterns, skaters will improve their balance, flow, and technique — all while having a great time on the ice. It’s a fresh and engaging way to develop strong fundamentals in a relaxed, supportive setting.

This is a new to program here at the Ice Arena and it is perfect for any young skaters looking to start Ice Hockey, or who have recently started. Whether you have come through our come and Try’s series , or are an Ice Blast graduate or have seen Ice Hockey while you were public skating and wanted to learn how to skate and play the game. There is a strong emphasis on Skating basics in this course. If you need to use or borrow our equipment it is all here to help ease the process in your child’s hockey journey.
